Resurrection
When Rob contacted me and asked if I would write a Daily Reflection on Resurrection, I thought oh boy. I did not want to say no, to Rob, so here I go.
I am almost a lifetime member of St. John’s. I am a lifetime Episcopalian Baptized at St. John’s Church Beverly Farms Ma, my mother’s family church. Confirmed, married Al 54 years ago, our 3 children were baptized and grew-up here at St. John’s. I am not a scholar as you will be able to tell from my reflection.
I am writing about The Resurrection with a capital R, the rising of Christ from the dead and taking away the sins of the world. Like Rob said in a Sunday Homily, Easter is a season not just a day. The Easter Season ends with the Day of Pentecost which is usually in May. Because of being on the Altar Guild Team that serves in May, we remove the Easter hangings and change too red for the day of Pentecost and then to green for the Trinity Season. Like a lot of people when the day or season is over, I go on to the next season or things in my life, until next Easter.
We are fortunate at St. John’s to have the beautiful place to worship with all the art and symbols around us. The one that is the most prominent to me is the “shadow painting” over the arch around the altar area of the ascending Christ. Rob has referred to a child’s comment that it looks like he (Christ) is jumping rope. Now when I look up, I remember that, and it makes me smile. Barbara Widen a woman I have known for years and I greatly admire was director of the Altar Guild when I joined. Barbara pointed out to me Christ is ascending but is looking out over the people instead of up to heaven. It is a good reminder when I go to church for services, Baptisms, Rite 13, Conformation, Ordination, Weddings and Funerals that I look up to remind me why Christ died for us and was Resurrected to save the people of this world. As we move on with the next events in our life, I hope if it doesn’t already remind you of the Resurrection that the ascending Christ will remind you of this during the coming years at times other than Easter.
