A Prayer for Uncertain Times

Like so many of you I am self-quarantined at home wondering how I can be of some earthly and spiritual use to St. John’s church family and also, in some small way, to the rest of humanity. I know many of you feel likewise. So, please pray with me....

Dear Lord, though You created all humans as your children sometimes I just don’t “get it.” I say I know You but often I behave like I don’t. I say I know Your intention for me, but then I fall by the wayside. Too often my problem seems to be that I think I am You. After all, Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, He that believes on me, the works that I do shall he (and she) do also; and even greater works than these …” So, why do we fail? Our fragilities, our unbelief belie us.

O God! O Jesus! No longer will I be anxious nor will I let worldly troubles harass me. I refuse to dwell on the unpleasant things of life. Always You are more friend to me than I am to myself. I dedicate myself to You. You are my healing. Remembrance of You and faith in You are my remedies.

In the beginning was the Word, and the word was Jesus, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Heavenly father, dear Jesus, Your Name is our healing and our thoughts of You our guide. As the Christmas star guided the wise men, make us Your superstars. As Easter tells us of Your resurrection, guide us safely through this pestilence. Illumine us with Your guiding light.

We seek with You the coming together of all humans into Your Unity. We know You, as we, ache for the harmony of humankind. Deep down, we recognize there’s only One of us here.

Teach us acceptance of Your will during this global contagion. Help us to understand Your purpose for ALL people and to realize anew that as we think, so we become. Our bodies and spirits and Your resplendent energies are one.

Nearness to You is our hope. Your spirit is our healing. We enthusiastically want to learn from You. Being in You and You in us is our remedy.  You are our Teacher. You are the All-Bountiful, the All-Knowing, the All-Wise. Thanks be to You, God…Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  AMEN.
