Upper Elem. Church Service Assignments

For families of our beloved upper-elementary aged children (age 9-11) at SJC

Beginning Sunday 5/15, upper elementary students (age 9-11) are encouraged to participate in church service opportunities each week through Sunday, June 12th. Here are the options and how to sign up your child/ren. Getting kids involved in all areas of possible service is a great way to help kids recognize their gifts and interests as they pertain to the operations of community worship as well as intersecting our children with some of the very consistent and dedicated older generations. A treasure of a relationship. All positions can be partnered so kids who are more comfy rolling with a buddy can have that option. :)

Everyone’s start time is still 9:30, where you go will depend on what you’re doing!

USHER - Practice collecting & presenting the offering and learn when/how to ring the bell. Up to 4 students per Sunday.

READ - Could be a single or pair, read a pre-determined lesson during the Rite Two 10AM Service. Clara Haight will offer the first reading on May 15th. Students who enjoy being busy can double as an Acolyte or Usher if they are a reader!

ACOLYTE - First-timers get on-the-job training alongside clergy and other acolytes. After you complete two-to-three services, you’ll have a good grasp on your role around the altar. Starting off in pairs while we “train.” (Jack Boston has been serving regularly alongside the teen acolytes, Noah and Emma. Anne Martin has served as an acolyte as well.) We invite two students to Acolyte on May 15th

SUNDAY SCHOOL: This week, Joe Weir will invite any students who are not engaged in the church service for a Sunday school class in the choir room. (Thank you Joe, Brad and Tom for carrying this raucous and whip-smart crew week to week!) All Sunday school classes will continue per usual.

Service to the Community AND Intergenerational Ministry

I hope you’ll chat with your kids and offer them a choice of where to be week to week. Trying different things is really good. Acolyting requires repetition so its wise to sign up two-three times in the next 5 Sundays if your student is interested in getting to know that role.

This season of five Sundays will bring us through Pentecost on June 5th (including Baptisms!) and land us on June 12th, our first Summer Sunday and Musical Review Performance from the SJC kids’ choir crew. Fun for kids in that group - Kendall and the whole crew (Alice, Olin, Ashley, Zuri, Josie) will be there this Sunday, so we’ll be able to focus on choreo and movement! There’s still time to join this, we’re figuring out what feels good as we go! The performance will be in the church after the Rite Two Service on 6/12.

With lots of love, and excitement to see these big kids serving in church in the coming weeks!
