The gift of music

The Rev. Rob Stevens

One of my favorite sayings is that “No one leaves church humming the sermon.”

Music transcends, transports, and transforms us.  Music is one the gifts that St. John’s has the privilege of sharing with the world.  The Choir School at SJC embodies this.  We seek to share the love of music with kids throughout the seacoast.   We have immensely talented teachers and a community that welcomes all (no matter what).

Please come this Saturday at 3:30pm to see this gift in action.  The Chapel Street Band (comprised of the teachers of the Choir School) will be preforming at St. John’s.  The concert is a Benefit for the Choir School, but for me it is more than that.  It is the mission of sharing our gifts with all people.

Evangelism is a word often avoided by Episcopal churches as it is often seen as coercion.   So is sales. It’s often viewed as how to make someone buy something (they don’t want) from you or agree to your philosophy or religion.  “I’m in Sales, not management” is one of my “throw away” lines.  This makes some people cringe.  Yet, I hold fast to that statement.  I am in sales.  Sales (and Evangelism), for me, is not about coercion, but rather sharing something that I am passionate about with the world.   I “sell” Community, Love and Jesus.  Saturday at 3:30pm will be a Love fest that I believe will leave impressions that will last for years if not decades and I guarantee that you will leave humming

May 13 at 3:30

All are welcome to St. John’s on May 13th at 3:30PM for a free benefit concert featuring heart thumping music, a festive reception with light hors d'oeuvres, 50/50 raffle, and silent auction. Chapel Street Band is brought together through their mutual love of harmony, and their partnership as the team of music educators for the Choir School, a free after-school music program which seeks to engage young people in the art of choral singing and musical training. Ashley Wade, Jennifer McPherson, Christina DeMaio, and Olin Johannessen will be joined by Steve Roy on mandolin and Rob Gerry on upright bass for a selection of songs showcasing 3- and 4-part vocal harmonies with string band. Students and other special guests will help to tell the story of the Choir School Program serving students students across the Seacoast. 100% of all donations collected from this event will support the Choir School children’s music program. DONATE NOW.
