The Rev. ROBERT E. STEVENS, JR.
SUNDAY SERMON: What is "true freedom?"
The Rev. Robert E. Stevens, Jr. preaches on 1 Corinthians 9:16-23 on the Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany.
We need to unpack the word “freedom.” It’s much more than simply being able to do whatever we want whenever we want to do it. True freedom is connected to service.
The collect for Peace on Page 99 of the Book of Common Prayer articulates true freedom well:
“O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."
How will we live into this definition of freedom?
