FUNDRAISER | Ice Cream Social

  • St. John's Episcopal Church 100 Chapel Street Portsmouth, NH, 03801 (map)

$5 Admission

Last January approximately two dozen volunteers transformed a totally empty house (no furniture, not a single pot, pan, plate, fork, or spoon) into a warm, comfortable, home for our newly arrived Afghanistan refugee neighbors: father Khalid, mother Gul Naseem, two daughters and two sons, ages 2 to 11. Their new lives in America have begun.

Over 100 Afghan families have been welcomed to New Hampshire and the goal of each is to be self-sufficient as soon as possible. But self-sufficiency requires a good command of English, help with finding jobs and schooling, transportation, and an understanding of how this very different society works.

Volunteers are assisting with an extensive list of necessities to help, including health care, interpreters, English tutors, employment, public transportation, and household budgeting. Khalid, who worked with the US military in Afghanistan, has found employment locally, but his earnings currently are not sufficient to cover the family’s needs. The entire family is taking English lessons and the children are attending school. But they still need our help!

When interacting with Khalid and his family, we are reminded of what our efforts are all about: giving the family the opportunity to rise and be treated as human beings. To have a life filled with dignity and a chance to feel safe. To have opportunities for themselves and their children, and to know life without war, which they never experienced before coming to the United states.
