The Book of Common Prayer describes Confirmation as an opportunity to “express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop" (BCP, p. 860), but I think it’s more than that. It’s an opportunity for us to claim our faith as our own, not just what was promised on our behalf in our baptism or the belief system of our parents. It’s also about belonging.
The Bishop, on behalf of the church, welcomes us into the fold and honors the commitment we’re making to be a part of the community, the body of Christ. The community gathered also plays a role, promising to support us on our continued journey of faith.
