Centering Prayer

  • St. John's Episcopal Church 100 Chapel Street Portsmouth, NH, 03801 (map)

Centering Prayer Group meets every Thursday from 10:30-11:30AM in the Philbrick Room in the lower level of Thaxter Hall, following the 9:30AM Eucharist. Open to anyone interested in this prayer form.

Centering prayer is a time to become present to God. This prayer form is simple, wordless, trusting, allowing for one to open to divine presence. Centering prayer was a practice of the Desert Fathers and Mothers in the 3rd-6th centuries and was found in the Benedictine tradition of praying the scriptures. The Christian mystics used this form of prayer.

“No words I write will be as eloquent as the silence within your soul.” -Bishop Steven Charleston
