Holy Eucharist Rite One

  • St. John's Episcopal Church 101 Chapel Street Portsmouth, NH, 03801 United States (map)

A spoken Service of Holy Eucharist Rite One is celebrated in-person and online. Our guest preacher today, The Rev. AJ Boots, is a recent graduate of the Master of Divinity program at The School of Theology in Sewanee, TN. After a summer of hospital chaplaincy work in Burlington, VT, AJ will return to Sewanee in September to begin a six-month monastic postulancy, a first step towards becoming a Sister at St. Mary’s Convent. AJ’s ordination to the priesthood is expected in January 2025. AJ grew up in Chichester, NH and prior to seminary, served in the Concord area as a staff member at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Church of NH.

The service of Holy Eucharist, also known as Communion or Mass, is the most important celebration of the Christian church. "Rite I" is the version of the liturgy that most closely follows the traditional language used in the Episcopal church and other Anglican churches for many generations in older versions of the Book of Common Prayer. Rite I was created in the Book of Common Prayer published in 1979. The 8am Holy Eucharist celebrated at St. John's using Rite I from today's prayer book is a quiet and contemplative service without music.
