LENT 2025
From Stillness to Service: A Wholehearted Lent
Lent is a season of renewal — a time to pause, reflect, and make space for God’s presence in our lives. It is also a time of preparation, as we open our hearts to the work of love and justice in the world. This year, as we continue our journey of Building Wholehearted Community, we invite you into a Lenten season that embraces both contemplation and action, deepening our faith as we walk together toward Easter.
Join us for a variety of offerings designed to nourish the soul and strengthen our shared commitment to love and service.

CHILDREN’S FORMATION: MAKING ROOM FOR JESUS
Sundays, 9:30am
During this season, children and youth will explore gentle ways to enter into Lent — learning how to say sorry, practicing forgiveness, and understanding the importance of community life. Through stories, activities, and reflection, we will introduce the concept of a "rule of life," encourage healthy choices for body, mind, and soul, and most importantly, discover ways to lift one another up as good friends and neighbors.
SUNDAY EVENINGS
Exploring ‘An Altar in the World’ with The Rev. Rob Stevens
SUNDAYS, 5-6PM
Join us for a weekly discussion series led by The Rev. Rob Stevens, where we will explore Barbara Brown Taylor’s classic book An Altar in the World. Together, we will reflect on how everyday practices can become acts of deep spiritual connection. A simple soup supper will be provided as we engage in conversation and learning.
SUNG COMPLINE: A TRADITION OF PRAYER AND PRESENCE
SUNDAYS, 7PM
A cherished tradition at St. John's, The Compline Choir led by John Stromgren offers a space for quiet, contemplative prayer and sacred song, Sunday evenings in Lent. Come and rest in the beauty of this ancient practice, allowing music and stillness to bring renewal to your spirit.
WEEKDAY OFFERINGS
Sabbath Walks: Rest, Renewal, and Connection
WEDNESDAYS, 5-6PM
Join us for weekly Sabbath Walks as the light begins to lengthen. Each Wednesday during Lent we will come together for a gentle, reflective walk — an opportunity to slow down, breathe deeply, and embrace the sacred in creation. With poetry and prayer to guide us, we will step into quiet contemplation, moving between solitary walking and shared reflection. These walks are meant to be a gift to you, to create time for you to set down all that you are carrying to make room for the light to come. Walks are led by The Rev. Aaron Jenkyn and held outdoors at Little Harbor Trail Head at Creek Farm. In the event of inclement weather we will gather indoors at Thaxter Hall using our Indoor Labyrinth or other prayer stations.
SERVICE OF HOLY EUCHARIST, WITH PRAYERS FOR HEALING
Thursdays, 9:30aM
Service of Holy Eucharist Rite I in the side Chapel of the Sanctuary. Followed by Centering Prayer in the Philbrick Room and a Community Meal with The Common Table at 12 in Thaxter Hall. All are welcome.
We hope you will journey with us through this sacred season, finding renewal in stillness, and strength in service. Together, let us walk this Lenten path with open hearts and open hands.
Remembering Jesus’ death on the cross is only part of why we are here today.
The Rev. Rob Stevens reflects on the Gospel of John 13:1-17, 31b-35; Appointed for use on Maundy Thursday. May we not only be invited but truly receive the gift of love from God, and following Jesus’ example, turn to the world to love and serve.
“The Call,” Gail Randall; featuring the Morgan King, soprano, and The St. John's Parish Choir, under the direction of Jennifer Mulhern, Director of Music. Featured Offertory Anthem at the 10:00am service of Holy Eucharist Rite II on Sunday, March 10, 2024.
Many of the traditions of Holy Week both here at St. John's and across the church go back centuries, passed down from generation to generation…
The youth of St. John's have spent the weeks leading up to Holy Week thinking about the issues most important to them, and they would like you to take notice. Will you join them in their hopes, prayers, and aspirations for peace, equality and justice for all?
"May I Softly Walk & Wisely Speak," Shaker Hymn, arr. Kevin Siegfried. Featuring The Choir School at St. John's. This performance is part of our preparation for Shaker Harmony: Celebrating 250 Years of the Shakers in America, which will be presented live at St. John's on Sunday, May 19 at 3:00pm. What does an atheist, a pharisee and Jesus have to teach about how to grow in faith and how to talk about what we believe with those we love? In Sunday’s sermon Aaron reflects on the work of chaplains to help others make meaning during challenging times and the unexpected and beautiful ways God shows up in that work.
“There is a Balm in Gilead,” arr. William L. Dawson; featuring Joseph Harris, soloist, and the St. John's Parish Choir, under the direction of Jennifer Mulhern, Director of Music. Featured Offertory Anthem at the 10:00am service of Holy Eucharist Rite II on Sunday, March 3, 2024.

"Like as the hart," by Noel Rawsthorne. Featuring the St. John's Parish Choir under the direction of Jennifer M. Mulhern, Director of Music and Organist. Featured Offertory Anthem at the 10:00am service of Holy Eucharist Rite II on Sunday, February 18, 2024.
In Sunday’s Gospel reading we heard the remarkable story of Jesus’s baptism and the start of his ministry in Galilee. In the space between these two events, we hear the story of how Jesus was spirited away, to the wilderness. The wildness is a place Jesus goes again and again when he is preparing to face the challenges of his life and ministry.
