"Lives of Love and Service"

Living a life of following Jesus isn’t a spectator sport. The Transfiguration is not only a powerful moment for Jesus for us to admire, but a powerful invitation for each of us. It reveals how God’s transformative power can change our lives. Each encounter with the holy leads us deeper into the life of love and service. Buckle up!  It’s a ride well worth the work.

BEYOND THE MUSIC

March 9 – Women Composer Sunday

Inaugurated in 2021 by the Society of Women Organists and the Royal College of Organists, Women Composer Sunday is celebrated on the Sunday closest to International Women’s Day (March 8th). Musicians are encouraged to include music by women composers in their church services and other performances. At St. John’s, we’re taking it one step further by programming at least one organ or choral work by a female composer every Sunday in March, which is International Women’s Month. This Sunday, St. John’s parishioners will hear music by Clara Schumann (1819-1876), Eurydice Osterman (b. 1950), Maureen Howell (b.1962), and Lea Morris (b. 1978).

The melody of our communion anthem for this Sunday, March 9, titled "Heart wide open," came to composer Lea Morris while on a morning walk in March of 2020.

“Keep your heart wide open, though the waves want to push you around.

You’ve got to keep your heart wide open, ‘til your faith brings you back to solid ground.”

Brief prepared and submitted by Jennifer McPherson Mulhern, Director of Music and Liturgy

FROM STILLNESS TO SERVICE: A WHOLEHEARTED LENT

Lent invites us into a season of deep listening — a time to slow down and notice what opens us to God’s presence and what distracts us from it. What keeps us from being fully available to the Spirit’s movement in our lives? This week, as part of our Lenten offerings, we share this poem as a guide for reflection. May it open space for you to listen with curiosity and trust, knowing that God moves with us in the unfolding.

As you reflect, what might God be inviting you to release or embrace in this season?
