The Rev. Rob Stevens
The Heart of the Gospel
A reflection on the Gospel passage Luke 10:25–28: Behold, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read?” And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” And Jesus said to him, “You have answered right. Do this and you will live.”
This is the heart of the gospel, the summary of the law to love God with all that you have and love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Consider your life and how you practice this commandment. Is there evidence at the end of the day that we have loved God with all that we have? That we love our neighbor and that we love ourselves? May we be about that work, considering how our practice of life reflects that love.
